extra dash im working on

Post by 500hpKA240sx »

I pulled this dash out of the white car that i was doing work on and the guy had sadly molested it. it was originally black and he painted it blue and white.... since there was no fixing the damage that was already done i decided to fab gauge cluster and then im going to carbo fill the seems and then Slicksand the whole thing and finish it. after all this work im going to have a fabric place wrap it.

btw i chose to go with metal b/c i can bend it to make it fit a bit easier than other material and plus the metal that is use to fab this up is off of another 240sx thats junk lol

If you do another one, do you think putting an angle on the gauges to face the driver would work. Great work!

yea i might make another one a buddy of mine wants one done but its a lot of work, but yea it is very slightly angled but not enough to see in the pics i thought even with them being straight it would still be a lot easier to see rather than it being mounted in the center vents facing the roof of the car.... thanks man

My only concern is the body filler cracking over time from the vibrations and flexing.

its not a light weight filler its SEM's Kevlar filled filler and its glasses over top it wont crack.

its not finished yet the work is done but I dont have enough money to have it sent off to have it wrapped right now. once i have enough ill have it professionally wrapped. so for the time being i just coated it in flat black to keep the glare off the windshield.

Why not coat the entire dash in filler then go over it with a DA sander and smooth everything out would take maybe an evening and it would look like much more of a finished product? I like the idea, and it should look good when complete, I just think I would wait to put it in until it looked or was more finished.

Or if you didn't want that much work, you could even pick up a can of 3M Super 77 and a yard and a half of black suede from the fabric store and cover your dash in suede to match the steering wheel and have no glare. I sewed some suede onto the high wear parts of my momo seat, front door inserts, shift boot and glove box. It's all holding up pretty good.

looks like you put a good amount of effort in that I think some sem coating on it would even out some of the textured areas and give it a good look...

Im going to attack my dash soon

I have suede and its not ideal for this job...it doesn't need to be as smooth as you think it should be and its a waste of material to coat the whole thing. Also there's to many Rounded spots for a da. im not skilled enough to wrap the dash so ill just save up and send it off to have it done right.

As far as looks wise I dont really care do Tim more of a performance guy. Looks come later. And I need my guage installed.

I've never flocked anything myself yet, but I was looking into that.

From my understanding here is how it works.
You get glue and flocking powder that comes in many different colors.
apply glue to the surface, and then cover the whole thing in flocking powder
it takes long time for the glue to set but when it's done you can shake off the excess powder and you're done
flocking will give it suede texture

what do you mean? It was just a base to lay filler and sand it smooth. under the factory plastic coat is like a foam and filler wouldnt hold for very long.

the pics are not out of order? this is where it sits.. my car stopped turning over and so i pulled the dash to finish it. where the 3 gauges sits is where the center vent goes. and where they where located I havent cut the holes yet I got a fcukin case of some viral infection in my throat and I went to the ER.......fml. but im back home and it will be finished soon. and it wont go in the car until 100% finished. I have a good job now and I went and bought everything I need to finish it
