Open hearing on the forum software side of things

Post by airman »

Hey all,

I just wanted to highlight for everyone I have been given access to the forum's administrator control panel. This isn't as significant as making significant changes to the site (ie "Ride of the month", tech articles, etc, what you would need server access for) but I can work towards fixing any bugs or adding features contained within PHPbb and its modules.

That said, we can use this thread for updates/changes/requests.

I believe I have solved the issue with login sessions not lasting, so hopefully we can cross that one off. Holler if this seems to be working for you.

Cheers

I was finally able to stay logged in using Internet Explorer. Firefox logs me out as soon as I log in. Does this sound like a browser setting issue? It has never done this up until the past few days.

Hey adam, it does sound like it could be a local issue. I logged in using Firefox 31.0. Went to the about tab to see which version I was running, updated to the latest 32.0. Restart was required, and when it came back up I was still logged in.

Hmm, I don't know what's going on then. I just updated to v32.0, restarted, and it's still doing it. No big, I'll figure it out.

Try deleting all cookies. I was having this issue trying to view new comments and it would take me back to the login screen. I use ccleaner to do my auto cleans.

What does it take to be an Admin/Moderator? What are the perks?

Can we incorporate an embedded video feed on the main page with links to popular performance channels like on youtube? Would an Instagram page with intros/ builds/ troubleshoot issues/q&a be feasible ?

YEEESSSSS finally staying logged in!!!! That was a major issue. Thankyou SOOO much for doing that airman!

I'm using the older version of Firefox (31.0) and "knock on wood" its been keeping me logged in when I close the ka-t.org tab (or window) and open up a new ka-t.org tab (or window). It also keeps me logged in when clicking on links through my email notifications. I tried using the "private browsing" option too and it asks for a log in, but then stays logged in in the same way as long as that same private browsing window is open.

Some other things to check if Firefox isn't remembering passwords:
*In the 31.0 version: Firefox-> preferences...-> privacy-> there is an option to "remember history" and "use custom history"
*Firefox-> preferences...-> security-> "remember passwords"

This is exactly the kind of stuff I want for the site. There is a lot we can dream up! I've heard a lot of good ideas. Unfortunately though, I haven't been able to have full access to the servers (aka ownership).

Hopefully one day I will be the/an owner to where these type of changes can be made. For now, I feel fortunate to have Admin access to the forum.

Glad this seems to have fixed the login problem :)

Got your cookies cleared and all that? Perhaps your security settings have cookies blocked?

Also try deleting all board cookies - use the link on the bottom right of any page that says 'Delete all board cookies'.

Yeah, I was talking to someone on here about changing the banner at the top to either the old Ka-T.org banner or some other creative banner. I think the project was kinda dropped though because neither one of us had the access to change it..... but..... airman might be up to the challenge if we ask REALLY nicely...

Unfortunately he does not have access either. If he gets access to raw php files, then he can alter the site.

Oh man, it was worth a shot I guess. So these raw php files would be kept by the webspace provider themselves then? So we would have to contact them to change the picture at the top?

They are hosted on the webserver and whoever has access to these files can manipulate the site. Basically, you download the site to your pc, edit with Dreamweaver or someother wysiwyg editor, then upload to server, refresh webpage, and cross your fingers the change is what you wanted. I hate web design now or I would offer some help. Plus no time with work and kids.

The situation will come down to Ryan's decision on what to do with the site. I have suggested selling ownership, but over the last 2 years or so I have only been able to coax a few sentences out of him.

Luckily Rick has been able to allow me Administrator access, though. He's been good at keeping the forum software up to date, so we do know he is still around us :)

What about the fact that photos are cut off on the right side while using a computer desktop browser, while my phone browser, safari, can see the whole photo that is uploaded?

It has something to do with the built-in themes. I am running subsilver2 - it doesn't seem this happens for me!

I almost forgot about this; the same thing happens on my computer and phone using safari or Firefox, but then if I click on the pic it shows the whole picture in a separate window.

I originally thought it was a space constraint on my browser window, but when I reduced the size of the text in the window on my mac (apple key+ minus sign key) to the point at which the text was barely visible, the pic stayed cut off.

Airman- what is "subsilver2"? is it a browser filter? Would this be something we could all use and would it work on a phone browser?

Subsilver2 is one of the themes in your user control panel under Board Settings
