JGS D21 update *wishlist...*

Post by JGSturbo »

Finally its PAYDAY! After a handful of problems its driving, stopping, etc.
Lessons learned-
Remove load valve when doing rear disc brakes.
D21 EGR tubes aren't bolted to the engine anywhere.

7psi T3/T04E all original truck engine (note torque).
Dyno'd in 3rd so numbers are a little low.
Still fairly strong for a low comp low boost truck KA24E IMO.
Also I'm using the AEM FIC to bypass the MAF :) By feeding the ECU voltages via boost and RPM I was able to make a decent driving tune. Some more small tweaks are needed but it wasn't much different than tuning a standalone.

Drives good, wish I had more dampening... Needs more rebound resistance.
Needs camber in the front... Steering feels decent for a swing arm.
My shortened and bent shifter works great.

Fantastic, It must be great to actually drive it around.

So that would be almost double the torque and power, yes.?
What,s next on the agenda.?

I've alot of other projects to catch up on so not much for a while.
Mainly just perfecting whats done so far.
Someday them old truck intake will have to go, need to get together another 4" plenum short runner intake. They make a SOHC sound MEAN :o See what kind of gains I get.
Its already got an ACT Xtreme PP so its ready for some power.

Hell alls it's missing right now is a boost controller but power is ok for now until I get used all the other stuff.

i'm boosting my d21 also, that's pretty neat that you got it going. so the FIC wire in like a piggy back or it replaces the oem ecu ? i might look into that option. not sure if the truck ecu can be chipped for rom tuned.

what is that black box by the back gate ?

Thats the cover for the fill tube (rear mounted gas tank, see thing rear license plate is bolted to.

The stock ECU is still in place, the AEM feeds the ECU maf values from a psi/rpm map.
Its okay so far, for some reason I'm have issues with the narrow band letting it run rich during closed loop. Maybe I'll go back to the AEM WBO2 output...

I'll have to say its a beast to corner hard. Very odd feeling, its a fast BOX
NEEDS Front camber!! It doesn't PLOW (terminal understeer) but it won't oversteer.
Reminds me of my E36 BMW. Not the fastest but its entertaining.

The JGS KA24E starter package works good on the D21.
It doesn't bolt-on to the stock exahaust but there's not much available for large D21 exhausts so a custom one is a must anyhow.

Its a fun rig to rod on, MAF-MAP conversion still needs work but its driveable.
I need to re-valve the shocks BAADD.

Nice job on your setup. Im currently tossing a SOHC into my datsun 620. Motor mounts and transmission crossmember should be here this week. Gonna start yanking the l16 and the ka wednesday. Already have the 240 intake/wiring/ecu. Upgraded to an all aluminum fiero radiator that still needs installing. Truck has 300zx brakes in the front with qa1 front coilovers. Also have a 300zx master that I havnt put on yet. Id post a few pictures however work doesnt allow photobucket so i cant grab the links. Heres a link to the build thread on another forum.

I plan to turbo the motor and will likely be giving you some business in the future. Keep up the good work.

Hey i was curious how this thing is running... My piston is slightly melty from too much boost, but its getting back on the road soon... is this thing still alive and going well?

Yup, it runs OK. I have a MAF back on it so I can quit using the temperamental MAF to map conversion. I'd like to get it on the dyno and up the boost for some more fun.
I have some 255 DRs for the back and I think it should actually hook pretty well for some local 8th mile fun.
I now have quad shock (2 extra $16 napa specials) on the front and it works much better (the QA1 street C/O could NOT handle 800lb springs which is still pretty soft), I lowered it a bunch front and rear too. It made a good leap towards being what I want.

Do you have that TB hat for the truck lying around? I would gladly purchase it from you :D

Well I'm back on this project... Mainly to get it ready to sell, its not enough truck to tow my 20ft trailer with my Bi-sequential turbo toyota V6 sandrail on the back. Also no room for a baby seat.
Giving up on the blow-thru maf I had setup, switching to the tried&true drawthru with a recirc'd 40mm bypass valve. Then we're doing an all new tune with new/improved dyno numbers. While I doubt dyno numbers will make it sell it will be some closure for me.

I'll post some pics later.
