car not starting after walbro fuel pump install

Post by ATL240 »

I just installed a brand new walbro fuel pump in my S14 with a z32 fuel filter and now it's having problems. It was running great for a day after the install, but then it started sputtering and turning off while I was driving it. Now it just won't start at all. I can hear the pump buzz every time I open the switch so i'm confused as to what's wrong.

It has good spark, compression, and I took the gas line after the fuel filter and gas comes out when I open the switch. What could it be? The car is broken down so I really need to fix it ASAP. Please help

Well you possible might have flooded it, but something else is wrong. Just wondering, what kind of FPR do you have? Is it just stock? And how did you wire the pump up? Did you follow the instructions correctly?
Id say take your plugs out see if there covered in gas, and leave the plugs out for a day, or just a super long time, gotta let that gas sink and or evaporate. See if your oil smells like gas too, if so CHANGE it. After you let it sit for a long ass time, put all the plugs in again, and see if she will fire. Hopefully you didnt wire it up wrong.

I'm running the stock FPR, and no turbo yet. Yeah I took the spark plugs out and there fine, I also left them off overnight. I no for sure that I wired it right( I followed the write-up from here) the stock fuel pump also tells you which wire is +/- . And it started up fine the first time and ran good for a day.

I noticed on one of the fuel hoses when the switch is open that gas flows but not constant. Is this normal???

err..... maybe you might just have a bad pump man... or somethings blocking... you should have constant pressure i believe

It's hose that goes to the FPR. I just looked at it again, when I leave the switch on the pump turns on and off. Where could it possibly be blocked at though if the filter is fine?? I hope it's not the pump.

whatsup man ,if i were you 1st thing i would do is take off the feed line going to the injector rail, put the car in the acc position and see if the pump primes the fuel line(have a bucket to catch gas if any comes out)

2nd id hard wire the the fuel pump directly to the battery for its own power source

I second this. Jump it and see if that helps it.

thanks. I jumped the relay and the pump runs good so that means the pump is good. But the car does not stay on even with the pump buzzing. And I changed the relay and it still clicks!

Also took the hose off after the filter and plenty of gas comes out.

Now what??

by spark leads do you mean spark plug wires(yes they are in the right order)?? And it's an s14 so coil is built into distributor.

Today I put the stock fuel pump back in & no luck. It still primes itself every couple of seconds......would a bad fuel pressure regulator or injectors make it do this?? I can't think of anything els that would cause this but the ECU.

I have had a walbro die on me after 4 months. These pumps need more than 1/4 tank at all times. The fuel cools down the pump.

did you check your plugs you might have fouled them out. i know a walbro on stock fpr will bring base fuel prressure up.

I changed the plugs, and I keep checking them after cranking the car every couple of times. Im gonna try and get a cheap ECU and swap it out to see if that is the problem.

Last night my cousin and I sprayed carb cleaner through the intake and it started but would shut off when we stopped spraying it of course.

Get a fuel pressure gauge.

Carb cleaner isn't a diagnostic tool.

Actually it is a great tool! Tells you timing is good, spark is good but fuel is bad. If he crimps the return line and car turns on then FPR is bad. Maybe the fuel lines are backwards, ecu bad, injectors bad. Without pics or we physically there, it is hard for us to find the solution.

Today I changed the FPR. The car ran great for a couple of minutes then it started sputtering and it turned off a couple of times. So i'm guessing the distributor is going bad?
